Build environmental estimates from clear assumptions

Environmental calculators translate activity data such as distance, fuel use, electricity, waste, or water consumption into an estimate that is easier to compare. Choose inputs from the same period and location whenever possible. A local utility bill, vehicle efficiency figure, or measured journey is usually more useful than a broad average.

Emission factors and resource intensities vary by energy mix, fuel, technology, season, and methodology. Use the result to compare scenarios or identify the largest contributors, not as a certified inventory. If the estimate supports reporting, procurement, or policy work, document the source, boundary, and factor version used.

For a useful comparison, change one variable at a time. You might compare the same journey with a different vehicle efficiency, test how reduced electricity use changes a monthly estimate, or examine water collection under several rainfall scenarios. Keep the baseline visible so the estimated saving and the assumption responsible for it are clear.
